In the 1930s when Mrs. Angela Giulione was growing up in Montefalcione, Campania both the old and young took note of Carnival (the day before Ash Wednesday). Back then children dressed up in home-made carnival costumes and knock on their neighbors' doors, singing the following little song: "You are patron of this house so give us a big plate of food." Following local tradition, most people gave the children pieces of home-made dried sausage, oranges and dried figs. Actually, the kids got mostly dried figs as there were plenty of those around. Most people (even those who weren't farmers) had fig trees on their property and so the trees produced fruit and it was free.... Image ID: The New York Public Library, Digital Gallery # 1619139. |
