Notes
In Italy birthdays were rarely taken note of -- "Name Days" were. One's Name always fell on the same day of the year when that saint whose name you shared was taken note of by the Catholic church. However as soon as Italians immigrated to North America at the turn of the last century Name Days became less and less important. By the late 1960s most children of first-generation Italian- North Americans had no idea what day of the year their Name Day fell on. However, birthdays became major family events, and were celebrated with "traditional" Italian sweets. |
