Notes
Prior to World War II Italians living in the countryside were more likely to celebrate an individual's "Name Day" than his birthday. However as soon as they immigrated to North America they noticed that on this continent "Name Days" were not important, but birthdays were a very big deal. So, of course, Italians adopted the local traditions. In the 1950s they baked their own cakes, later on they generally made all kinds of desserts, including cakes, but the one on which the candles were placed on, was bought. |
