Notes

Saint Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon ca. 1195 to a wealthy family who was displeased by his decision to become a monk. He is often called the "hammer of the Heretics" as he spent his life trying to teach the true meaning of church doctrine. He was canonized less than a year after his death. In many areas of Italy this saint has a strong following. Prior to World War II special breads and/or pannini were made on his feast day. The bread was then brought to church and there blessed. Nowadays many of the specialty St. Anthony breads are available year round in shops; fewer and fewer individuals make them at home or bring them to church for the blessing.
