Prior to World War II wine grape marmalade (or jam) pizzelle sandwiches were only made for very special events like weddings and baptisms. However, as soon as those from Molise and from other Southern areas in Italy immigrated to North America, they started to make their favorite cookies for any family gathering (It didn't even have to be a big party, any excuse was a good excuse to bake cookies!).
