Notes

Amaretti cookies were only made for very special events in Italy -- that included weddings, baptisms and Holy Communions. Of course by the 1950s what consituted a "special event" broadened. In Canada amaretti and every other kind of taralli, cookies or cakes were offered when any old visitor dropped by.... The picture was taken by Mary Melfi; the cookies were made by Sue Alfieri who used her cousin's recipe (Pauline Fresco) to make them. Sue's cousin, of course, got the recipe from hter mother -- Nunziatina (nee Melfi) Fresco --who made the best Italian cookies in Montreal during her lifetime.
