Notes

Fewer and fewer Italian-Canadians are preparing eel on Christmas Eve. Children dislike the look of eels (associate them with snakes, I guess). So second-generation and third-generation Italian-Canadians end up serving other types of fish or seafood. In the 1950s new immigrants always served eel on Christmas Eve and were proud of the fact that they could afford it. It was a special event as eel was only served on this day of the year.
