Notes

Prior to World War II birthdays were rarely celebrated in Southern Italy, but one's Name Day was taken note of, and feasted with sweets. In Molise "biscotti with almonds" were the most popular sweet offered to guests on Name Day celebrations and every other special occasion. Pizzelle were also very popular in the countryside as these cookies could be baked at home on the hearth (Few had ovens back then!). Most other sweets were sent to the communal oven for baking which of course incurred extra cost. That's why those who owned pizzelle irons (Not everyone did) considered themselves very lucky, as these cookies were much loved by the community.
