Notes

Prior to World War II (according to this contributor's Zia Rosina) taralli were often served to visitors who dropped by for a "special occasion." The taralli were also served during the grape harvest. It was believed the salt in the taralli increased the appetite and appreciate for the wine. As wine was considered a man's drink, taralli also came to be thought of as a "manly" food. Often men drank wine with taralli and salted pork. When a new wine was brought it, inevitably it was toasted with home-made taralli.
