Notes

In most areas of Italy the bread served on St. Joseph's Feast Day is shaped as a cane (The cane represents a shepherd's staff). However in some areas of the country St. Joseph's bread is shaped as a cross, and/or is braided. Apparently, most celebratory breads served in Europe on feast days are traditionally shaped as canes, crosses, crowns and/or are braided. Some breads contain no extra flavoring, while others include honey, raisins and aniseed seeds.... The traditional symbol of St. Joseph is a lily.... The bread shown on this entry was bought from Montreal's "La Casa della Pizza" located at 5540 Jean-Talon East. Photo: Mary Melfi.
