Montreal, Quebec, Canada | | Date: 1965 | | Notes: The contributor's paternal grandparents visited Canada in 1965 to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Her nonni's four children managed to save enough money to pay for their tickets (Quite a feat in those days). Nonna Assunta and Nonno Michele were not impressed with Canada --the country was far too cold for their taste. They couldn't wait to go back to Italy. While Nonna Assunta and Nonna Michelino had a good marriage, not all couples in Italy who made it to their 50th anniversary were as lucky. Prior to 1970 it was against the law in Italy to get divorced. Not only did the Catholic Church forbid it, but so did Italian government. In 1970, not only did Italy's marriage laws change, but so did everything else. The mass migration of Italians (over 25 million Italians left the country of their birth after World War II), had a huge impact on both those who left their native country and those who stayed behind. In 1970 Italy became a mirror image of North America. The "old country" ceased to be, or so thinks this contributor. | Contributed by: Mary Melfi
