Montreal, Quebec, Canada | | Date: 1957 | Notes: This is what Montreal's downtown core looked like in 1957. At the time Italians were not visible in this area -- there were no Italian-owned shops or restaurants that I can remember. Nonetheless, most Italian immigrants entered Montreal by rail. They usually crossed the Atlantic on an ocean liner, got off at Halifax, and then took the train to Montreal. Windsor Station was in the downtown core, and so most Italians would get their first impressions of the city by taking in the view of Montreal's tall buildings and busy streets.
