Filippo Indoni
Italy
Date: 19th century
Notes: Italy, like many other European countries has a variety of national symbols, including its famous tricolored flag, but according to a number of experts, including a high-level bureaucrat at Montreal's "Italian Cultural Institute," Italy does NOT have an official "national" costume. However, Italy's regions do have outfits which are considered "traditional" and "representative" of their area. Many of the regional costumes can be found on this website. Italy's national costume or sometimes referred to as as Italy's national dress appear in a variety of places, however they're all "unofficial" representations of the Italian national costume; while they're all similar, none of them are identical. For instance, "Italian national dolls," purchased in souvenir shops, purport to be dressed in the Italian "national" costume, but in fact, the dolls' "folk" costumes simply comprise of the basic elements found in most European dolls. Images of Italy's "unofficial" national costume and/or the Italian national dress can be found on this website in this category, titled, "Traditional Clothing." They can also be found in other categories on this website such as in "Agriculture." This category includes many paintings done by 19th century Italian artists who often depicted those living in the Italian countryside in traditional attire. Filippo Indoni (1842-1880) whose painting is shown in this entry is one such artist.
