Isernia (Latin: Aesernia or, in Pliny and later writers, Eserninus, or in the Antonine Itinerary, Serni; Greek: Αἰσερνία) is a town and comune in the central Italian region of Molise, and the capital of Isernia province.

      Geography
Situated on a rocky crest rising from 350 m to 475 m between the Carpino and the Sordo rivers, the plan of Isernia still reflects the ancient layout of the Roman town, with a central wide street, the cardo maximus, still represented by Corso Marcelli, and side streets at right angles on both sides.

The commune of Isernia includes 16 frazioni. The most densely populated is Castelromano which is positioned in a plain at the base of the La Romana mount (862 m), 5 km far from Isernia.

      History
The area of Isernia was settled at least 700,000 years ago: the nearby site called Pineta has been cited in the magazine Science as the most ancient site where traces of use of fire by men have been found.

The city's Roman name, Aesernia, reflects probably a former Samnite toponym, but a connection to an Indo-European root, aeser, which means "water", is tenuous.

Classical Aesernia was a city of Samnium, included within the territory of the Pentri tribe, situated in the valley of the Vulturnus (modern Volturno), on a small stream flowing into that river, and distant 22 km from Venafrum (modern Venafro). The Itinerary (in which the name is written "Serni") places it on the road from Aufidena to Bovianum, at the distance of 28 M.P. from the former, and 18 from the latter; but the former number is corrupt, as are the distances in the Tabula Peutingeriana.[1]

The first mention of it in history occurs in 295 BCE, at which time it had already fallen into the hands of the Romans, together with the whole valley of the Vulturnus.[2] After the complete subjugation of the Samnites, a colony, with Latin rights (colonia Latina) was settled there by the Romans in 264 BCE the city, a key communication center between southern Italy and the inner Appennine Regions. This colony is again mentioned in 209 BCE as one of the eighteen which remained faithful to Rome at the most trying period of the Second Punic War.[3] During the Social War it adhered to the Roman cause, and was gallantly defended against the Samnite general Vettius Cato, by Marcus Claudius Marcellus, nor was it till after a long protracted siege that it was compelled by famine to surrender, 90 BCE. Henceforth it continued in the hands of the confederates; and at a later period of the contest afforded a shelter to the Samnite leader, Papius Mutilus, after his defeat by Lucius Cornelius Sulla. It even became for a time, after the successive fall of Corfinium (modern (Corfinio) and Bovianum, the headquarters of the Italic League.[4] At this time it was evidently a place of importance and a strong fortress, but it was so severely punished for its defection by Sulla after the final defeat of the Samnites in 84 BCE, that Strabo speaks of it as in his time utterly deserted.

We learn, however, that a colony was sent there by Julius Caesar, and again by Augustus; but apparently with little success, on which account it was recolonized under Nero. It never, however, enjoyed the rank of a colony, but appears from inscriptions to have been a municipal town of some importance in the time of Trajan and the Antonines. To this period belong the remains of an aqueduct and a fine Roman bridge, still visible; while the lower parts of the modern walls present considerable portions of polygonal construction, which may be assigned either to the ancient Samnite city, or to the first Roman colony. The modern city is still the see of a bishop.[6] The massively constructed podium now unlying the cathedral probably supported the Capitolium.

Even after the fall of the Roman Empire, Isernia has suffered destruction numerous times in history. Isernia was destroyed by the Saracens in 800, sacked by Markward of Anweiler, Count of Molise, in 1199, and set on fire in 1223 by the soldiers of Frederick II. In 1519 it was freed from feudal servitude by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and became a free city.

Earthquakes in 847, 1349, 1456 and 1805 caused massive destruction.

On the morning of September 10, 1943, during World War II, American planes launched their bombs from B-17 Flying Fortress planes over a crowded town on market day causing thousands of deaths.[citation needed] In the following weeks they came back twelve times without ever hitting their targets: the bridges of Isernia, Cardarelli and Santo Spirito, then built entirely of iron, towards the internal area. All the bridges were vital to the German retreat.

In 1970 Isernia became the capital of the homonymous province, created out of part of the province of Campobasso.

      Coinage
The coins of Aesernia, which are found only in copper, and have the legend "AISERNINO", belong to the period of the first Roman colony; the style of their execution attests the influence of the neighboring Campania.[7]

      Main sights
Although having been object of repeated destruction, Isernia preserves a large number of monuments of fairly good archaeological interest. The historical center still keeps intact the spare map structure of the Roman cities: in fact it represents the largest raced Marcelli street, around which there is an infinity of alleys and little spares, as for example, "Trento e Trieste" spares. The famous Fraterna Fountain, the town's main symbol, was built in the 13th century: it is made up of living stone's slabs coming from ruined Roman monuments, while all the rest is a work of local masters, cmomissioned by the Rampini family of Isernia.

      Fontana Fraterna
Isernia in a vintage photo. The ?Fontana Fraterna? is a refined public fountain with six water jets, with an unusual arcade-shape, made of blocks of calcareous, compact stone. It was erected in 1835.

The fountain has articulated into three fillets laid one upon the other. From below, there is a series of smooth fillets (the one on the left is a Roman-epoch and fragmentary epigraph with the letters AE PONT, while in the centre there is a mat decorated with dolphins and a Roman-age flower, probably coming from a sepulchral building), then there is a median fillet with a series of six round arches supported, on the left side, by little circular columns and on the right side, by little octagonal columns.

Above these columns there are some capitals of re-employment. Two capitals have trapezoidal-plant abacus and perhaps adorned a window splay. The higher fillet presents a line of smooth ashlars on which twelve little hanging arches set, supported by little brackets adorned with zoomorphic, phitomorphic and geometric motives. On the bottom of the fountain, on a second level in respect to the arcade, you can distinguish two blocks of Roman age with some swags and a funerary epigraph dedicated to the god Mani. On its right side there is a third high-mediaeval epigraph, situated between two lion statues, referring to the building of a fountain. A deep study of the surfaces allows to verify that the blocks were worked on several occasions, with an extremely long interval, and that come from an undefined number of buildings of the town. Therefore the handiwork represents an interesting abacus of workings, decorative elements, an exemplar of material culture with centuries of town history written on.

      La Pineta
Isernia is also known for the archaeological excavation located within its borders, at Isernia La Pineta. Isernia La Pineta contains thousands of bones and stone tools covering 24,000 square yards. It was discovered in 1979, by an amateur naturalist noticed a bone sticking out of the side of a cut that had been created by the construction of the Napoli-Vasto motorway. The site was clearly created by humans, but its purpose is still unknown. The man who lived there was called Homo Aeserniensis.

      Castelromano
The largest and most populated rural village (500 inhabitants approx.) close to Isernia is Castelromano, situated in a plateau at the foot of Mount La Romana (882 m) at an altitude of 680 m above sea level, about 5 km west of the city.

The origin of the place is very old. It still has three impressive masonry walls placed to defend a fortified settlement (oppida) and an entrance off about 4 meters still visible where the road surface, dating to the 3rd and 4th centuries BC,

Molise is a region of Southern Italy, the second smallest of the regions. It was formerly (until 1963) part of the region of Abruzzi e Molise (with Abruzzo) and now a separate entity. The region covers 4,438 km? and has a population of about 300,000.

Molise borders Abruzzo to the north-west, Lazio to the west, Campania to the south, Puglia to the south-east and the Adriatic Sea to the north-east. With an area of 4 438 km2, Molise is the smallest region in Southern Italy, and the youngest region in the country as a whole.

Molise is a typically inland and mountainous region, despite its 35 km of coast on the Adriatic. About 55% of the region is composed of mountains and the remaining 45% of uplands (interior and coastal uplands). The absence of lowlands and the predominance of mountainous areas constitute a natural barrier to the social and economic development of the region. Climate is directly influenced by topography: there is a maritime climate in the narrow coastal strip, a temperate one in the uplands and a continental climate in the more inland and mountainous areas.

Many of the towns in the interior have been almost abandoned as young people travel to the larger centres to find employment. There is a particularly rich cluster of communities in the Larino area. These are characteristic medieval hilltowns formed around a church, or - as in the case of Larino - a massive cathedral.

      History
The ancient Cathedral of Larino is a prime example of Gothic in Italy.

Molise has been inhabited for thousands of years. The Samnites, along with the Frentani, dominated this region until arrival of the Romans. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, Molise was conquered by the Ostrogoths in 535, and then, in 572, by the Lombards, being annexed to the Duchy of Benevento. In 860 Saracens destroyed Isernia, Telese, Alife, Sepino, Boiano and Venafro.

By the 10th century there were nine countdoms: Venafro, Larino, Trivento, Bojano, Isernia, Campomarino, Termoli, Sangro and Pietrabbondante. In 1095 the most powerful of them, Bojano, came under the rule of the Norman lord Hugo I of Molhouse, who most probably gave his name to the region.

The province enjoyed a resurgence towards the end of the 13th century, as part of the unified Kingdom of Naples. In the 16th century Molise was incorporated into the province of Capitanata (Apulia). In 1806 it became an autonomous province in the former Abruzzi region.

In the 19th century there was a general worsening of the economic conditions of the population, and this gave rise, after the newly established Kingdom of Italy (1861), to brigandage and a massive emigration, not only abroad but also to more industrialised areas of Italy.

Massive destruction occurred during World War II until the Allied forces were able to land at Termoli in September 1943. Huge Allied land forces were based in Campobasso, which was called "Maple Leaf City" by the Canadian troops.

Molise is the newest Italian region, since it was established in 1963, when the region Abruzzi e Molise was split in two. It became effective only in 1970.

      Economy
Though there is a large Fiat plant (Termoli), the industrial sector is dominated by the building industry with small and medium-sized firms spread widely throughout the region. Another important industry is food processing: pasta, meat, milk products, oil and wine are the traditional products of the region. In the services sector the most important industries are distribution, hotels and catering, followed by transport and communications, banking and insurance. With few exceptions, in all sectors firms are small, and this explains the difficulties encountered when marketing products on a national scale[1].

After the earthquake of 2002 some of the communities in Molise became the focus of a generous government policy which contributed state money to individuals willing to make their homes more resistant to seismic activity. Larino, near Termoli, was a particular beneficiary of this policy and the town, already one of the most beautiful in the province, has been transformed. It was policy to return the houses to their historical colours and, based on careful research, the structures were painted in a range of soft pastel tones. As a result Larino has become an important centre for tourism and scores of expatriates from all over the world are returning to live in the revived centro storico (antique centre).

International tourism is becoming more evident largely as a result of the international flights from other European states, Great Britain, and North America which enter Pescara not far to the north in Abruzzo. The tourists are attracted by large expanses of unspoiled beaches, a relative lack of congestion, and the gentle pace of life.

The density of the population in Molise is well below the national average. In 2008, Molise registered 72.3 inhabitants per km2, compared to a national figure of 198.8. The region is subdivided into two provinces: Campobasso and Isernia, covering together 1.5% of the Italian territory and less than 1% of its population. The biggest province in terms of surface area is Campobasso (2,909 km2) and the smallest is Isernia (1,529 km2). The province of Campobasso is the most densely populated of the two provinces, with 79.4 inhabitants per km2, whereas Isernia registered 58.9 inhabitants per km2[2]. At the end of 2008 the most populous towns were Campobasso (51,247 inhabitants), Termoli (32,420) and Isernia (21,811).

In the period 1951-71, large-scale emigration to other countries of the European Union, to other parts of Italy and overseas led to a significant decline in the population of Molise. Negative net migration persisted until 1981. Large-scale emigration has caused many of the smaller towns and villages to lose over 60% of their population, while only a small number of larger towns have recorded significant gains. From 1982 to 1994, net migration has been positive, then followed by a negative trend until 2001. Between 1991 (330,900 inhabitants) and 2001 (320,601 inhabitants), the population of the region decreased by 3.1%[3]; since 2001 the population remained stable.

In the region there are two ethnic minorities: the Molisan Croats (5,000 people who speak an old Dalmatian dialect of the Croatian language) and the Molisan Albanians (Arb?resh? who speak an old dialect of the Albanian language which is now very different from the Albanian spoken on the other side of the Adriatic Sea). Molisan Albanians are generally of the Orthodox religion.

      Government and politics
      Main article: Politics of Molise
Although the region has a center-right local government, at the April 2006 elections, Molise gave 50.5% of its votes to Romano Prodi of the centre-to-left Olive Tree party.

In November of the same year, Michele Iorio, centre-right candidate, won the regional election with over 54% of votes.

A sud dell'abitato, in localit?

Isernia is a town of 21,831 inhabitants, capital of the province in Molise.

      Geography
Isernia is located in a hilly area located in the Molise, where vast areas where there are tracks. It is surrounded by dense woods where there are some countries, a Volturno qualiColli) or (Castelromano. is located on a ridge between two rivers called Carpino and Sordo, formerly known Gianocanense and Giovinale (or San Giovinale), which were dedicated streams two sacred figures: Janus and Jupiter. As for the Deaf seems to have acquired its name from the sound cupo (deaf, in fact) of its water. The Hornbeam owes its new name to the valley in which flows, the "valley goats" it was called before it became Caprimo and Carpino. Its old name, Gianocanense, comes from pagan Giano_ God (deities) and canere, the Latin verb which means to sing. In a document of the "Bridge Giancanese (Giano Camense)", in the volume of A. Viti, Res Publica Aeserninorum, Isernia 1982, pp. 149, reads: "Jano Canese, equally, it was of Janus Janus, deo with gray head, tope, Sonatori Flume, canere, pe'l are gorgheggi that the water makes its ne'l switch.

      History
The settlements in the area where now stands Isernia, go back into the Paleolithic: a theory interesting and credited on his behalf, in fact, back to the root aeser which means water. And his presence, abundant in the territory, was an important feature for urban settlement. Of the Roman period is the ancient aqueduct still in use today.

Despite this, the city's documented history begins only with the Samnite era: the expansion of the Roman Republic, and the consequent repression of the Samnite people interested in the Italian area of Isernia, whose defeat in 263 BC, by Roman, marked the birth of the Latin colony Aesernia.

It became the capital during the war by the Social Italici, was destroyed by Silla and later rebuilt, until it became municipium: the fall of the Roman Empire, however, reserved to the city's destiny to serve as a scene of destruction barbarians (in the 456) and then the Saracens.

Annexed to the County of Molise in the Norman domination, was directed into the ground Swabian period. Subsequently, the step of Anjou who was seized in 1316, in the form of precaution for the dowry of Catherine of Habsburg in view of marriage to Prince Charles said "the Illustrious", Duke of Calabria, who passed Isernia in the feud her death, in 1323.

After various events which saw the city go by Charles of Durazzo with his wife Margaret to James of Marzano, was declared city by Alfonso ID'Aragona during the fifteenth century.
      Piazza della Repubblica

In 1780, was the most populous city of Contado of Molise. The inhabitants made resistance against the French in 1799, during the attempted conquest of the kingdom of Naples. The same happened in 1860, under the Bourbon reaction against Piedmont. The town is also famous for being the scene in the early years of the unification of Italy of a massacre perpetrated by the occupation troops of Piedmont on the population defenseless. Similar massacres occurred at Pontelandolfo, Casalduni, Pizzoli, Scurcola Marsicana, Montefalcione and many other places. Claims the birth on its soil of Pope Celestine V, much to celebrate as patron.
      War memorial

On 26 July 1805 Isernia was destroyed by an earthquake: located in an area known earthquake, the city was destroyed several times over the centuries. In fact, the last destruction occurred on 10 September 1943 due to a massive bombardment from the Anglo-Americans. This event and the subsequent value of the population, have led the city to be among the city decorated with valor civile.

In 1860 the isernini joined the Bourbon reaction against Piedmont.

Natural disasters and wars over the centuries, have repeatedly disrupted the city. More than any other tragic event, Isernia victims suffered as a result of the bombing in September of 1943, the Anglo-Americans to the ground almost Rasero third town and caused the death of a very high number of people.

On 3 March 1970 Isernia was elevated to capital of the province.

Near the city of Isernia ( "La Pineta") in the summer of 1978 during the construction of a new road, they came to light the remains of an ancient human settlement Paleolithic, dating to about 730,000 years ago. The importance stems from the establishment of a floor formed from the bones of animals hunted by men, with a significant amount of artefacts that contribute to the knowledge of the natural environment, and the oldest attestation of the use of fire man. In 1983 was set at Isernia, in the premises of the Museo di Santa Maria delle Monache, the exhibition entitled "Isernia La Pineta, a camp more than 700,000 years old." Was later coined the term Homo Aeserniensis.

Built on an Italian pagan temple dating from the III century a. C and dedicated to the Capitoline Triad, still the remains of the podium. The present cathedral, a victim of several earthquakes, was rebuilt between 1826 and 1851.

      The Fountain of Fraterna
      Fontana Fraterna

It takes its name from a religious brotherhood founded in 1244 by Friar Peter of Morrone, the future Pope Celestine V, and approved by Bishop Robert d'Isernia on 1 October 1289. Some scholars speculate that the fountain was built in the mid-thirteenth century, for want of Benedict of Isernia, learned jurist, lecturer in civil law at the fledgling University of Naples and important diplomat, judge and adviser to the court of Frederick II, precisely to facilitate the work of charity of the brotherhood of Pietro da Morrone. In reality, as evidenced by documents preserved at the local Historical Archives of Santa Maria delle Monache, the Fountain of Franterna is the result of an interesting example of a merger of several ancient and medieval monuments (two fountains), created in 1835 by a wise local stonemason, Felice Caruso.

      Palazzo San Francesco

The City Hall building is located in St. Francis, whose construction preserves part of the original Gothic structure. It is also home to cultural and artistic activities (with a room dedicated to local painter Domenico Raucci).

The bridge Cardarelli, formerly The viaduct Precio

(News from a publication of late nineteenth century)

"At via Nazionale, and with slopes too heard across the city of Isernia, was replaced by a new road which is part of the viaduct that the accuracy for the crossing, at Isernia, the deep valley from which the name. The article is in two orders, although measuring 57 meters high, which makes it especially bold, unique. It is 130 meters long, of which 92 of the shoulders. Can the quick glance and therefore, for the great deal, there is a sense of grandeur and admiration, especially for those who consider it from the bottom of the valley. Its principle was built in 1887 and ended in April 1892, with expenditure of pounds 300,000. It takes 11,000 m cubes of masonry, including thousand meters of stone. In order to decrease the weight between the top of the arches above the road and there was a tunnel of 120 meters longitudinal, with a capacity of 1090 cubic meters. The tunnel is lit windows obtained under the arch and is easily workable. The engineer Civil engineering Baliviera Gustavo gave to the existing project, the current form and had the direction of work. "

The bridge is notorious for the city because of the many suicides that have occurred from it.

After the recent suicides of two young boys in 2008 were transenna the edges of the bridge with steel railings which play an important deterrent function.

The largest fraction and populated (500 people approx.) Castelromano which is located in a plateau at the foot of Mount La Romana (882 m) at an altitude of 680 m above sea level, about 5 km west of the city.

While falling in the municipality of Isernia, Castelromano differs significantly from the provincial capital for history, tradition and customs.

The origin of the place is very ancient. Still there are remains of three massive walls made defense of a fortified settlement (oppida) and an entrance off about 4 meters still visible where the road surface, which dates back centuries to the third century BC and IV a.C. , Inhabited by the Samnites, and Pentre tribes identified by several sources, with the name of Cominium, conquered by the Roman fortress in the Samnite Wars as reported in the Latin historian Titus Livius Ab Urbe condita. The village, which occupies the flat area at the foot of the mountain, was defended by walls in polygonal, well detectable on the east side, while the western side was protected by a natural overhang. Of this first structure is detected, close the door, a doubling of the walls on different levels. To the south of the village, at the Cross, a second city wall protected the burial ground with dozens of tombs, which are currently under investigation only in part. A third fort on the summit of Mount bounded an area rich in archaeological material surfacing. The walls are made of large boulders and rough more or less square, superimposed on a regular basis, with irregular flakes in the interstices. The east curtain is reinforced with blocks of stone in the round against the embankment. Are clear signs of a war that involved the top of the mountain "La Romana", in fact, emerge to the surface numerous pieces of pottery, bricks and tiles and the vastness of the area of interest to give us an idea of the territory by the Samnite tribes Pentre. Some theories put forward by reliable scholars Pentro capital say that the whole tribe, which populated the area that extends from the valley up to the Matese mountain range of Mainarde, took refuge within the fortified walls of the looming threat of the of Rome.

In the highest part of the mountain are still visible the ruins of a stone structure probably used as a warning tower, clearly visible from such a facility located about 1 km away at "Old Earth" falling in the town of Macchia D'Isernia .

The current village, located about 500 m. south of the Samnite ruins, comes from a military settlement of Lombard origin called Armagnum initially populated by a few settlers. The name "Armagnum" comes from the Lombard "Harimann" or man-Heer from the army, and army-Mann, man. The groups were arimanni of free citizens with full civil rights, not subject to slavery, that are posed to the service of king or duke to meet defense needs of the Lombard kingdom, the more required in areas prone to invasion of the Slavs and Avars. To them were allotted land in the vicinity of towns or in strategic locations, with the task of growing them and defend them. The arimanni were organized into brigades, the Arimannie, which usually hover around a fortified center most importantly, the castrum, which was the centerpiece of the whole defensive system. Over time the name then changed to "Castro Armannum", then "Castro Armani, La rimanna" and later "La Romana" by the contraction of the word "armani". Only in the last century (1936), the town took its present name, which therefore has nothing to do with survival of Roman origins.

The latest news historically documented, dating back to the time of the Norman domination.

Armagnum is first mentioned in the Catalogus Baronum (1150), which is assigned the fief to Roberto de Rocca, of the Norman feudal Ugo II di Molhouse (or de Molinis and Molise), Lord of Molise. A second confirmation of the place in the Norman period, is given by an account written during the pontificate of Pope Lucius III, on the state and the possessions of the diocese (1192), which states that the people of the Armani is venerated Santa Croce. Further quote you in an authoritative source of literature about tenth paid for the year 1309 in the Diocese of Isernia where a citation is given in which the Archpriest of Castro Armani agrees to pay its share.

Considered as a fund rustic, the town and the territory of Castelromano were sold several times as large estate until 1418 when James, Baron of the Family of Montaquila appointed bishop, having come into possession of the manor, gave a gift to the Bishop's Curia Mensa of Isernia which belonged to the disappearance of feudalism (1811), but that part has kept up the early twenty-first when the current residents have redeemed the remaining part of the feud. The bishop was then, for law, Baron de La Romana, and boasts the title of heraldic "Dominum Feudi Romanae".

Following several outbreaks of the plague of epic proportions that the population in the settlement was'600 Ripoli by settlers from the neighboring territories of Miranda, and Forli del Sannio Roccasicura. Evidence of this event, especially with regard to Miranda, there is still common today in the historic names, the same religious cults, customs and habits of all extraneous to the social fabric of the near Isernia.

In 1702 was built the Parish Church by Msgr. Biagio Terzi. Castelromano is still home parish, the patron is the Most Holy Savior celebrated August 6. On the patron tells you a funny anecdote. Around the mid-1800s, one of the citizens, returning from a neighboring village, he found a wooden statue of the Blessed Sacrament in a stream in dry, abandoned on that occasion by the people of that country as guilty of not protecting the crops from hail and decided to bring it to the back of a mule in the simple church just renovated (1848), which was then just dedicated to the Blessed (1857). In 1984, due to the earthquake, the church has suffered serious injuries that have brought the demolition a few years later. The present church of modern features, takes the form of the old "straw" and is supported by a stylized bell tower which houses the old bells of which one (the smallest one, dating back to 1620) was originally used to a small chapel located at the entrance of the country rendered unusable by the famous snowfall of 1956.

Given the modest origins of the village, there are no buildings of particular significance. The widespread and massive interventions of restructuring and recovery housing, operated in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1984 have also helped to radically change the aesthetics of the oldest buildings in masking the few architectural details still visible then. It retains, however, restored several times over the centuries (1802, 1924), the Source, a wall fountain with 4 collection tanks fed by underground springs.

To remember the tradition of the Fire 'Vilia' (Eve), lit bonfires on the square outside the parish church on the night between 24 and December 25 to light and heat symbolically the Holy Birth.

Agnone, Isernia -- History and Culture (in Italian)
Date: Current
Notes: Da Wikipedia, l'enciclopedia libera. [Engish translation follows]

Agnone, Isernia -- History and Culture (English translation)
Date: Current
Notes: From Italian Wikipedia; Google machine translation
Agnone is a town of 5452 inhabitants of the province of Isernia.
This ancient Samnite town is famous worldwide for its historic factory in the manufacture of bells, one of the few who can boast of honor to use the products on his papal coat of arms.

      History
Tradition has it that Agnone is built on the ruins of the city Samnite Kites destroyed by the Romans during the conquest of Sannio: in the area were recovered several archaeological finds, such as the funerary stele of Vibia Bonitas, currently kept at the Teatro Italo Argentino, in the old town.

Important during the Lombard, he then fell in the centuries immediately preceding 1000, while the Verrina Valley and the hills surrounding the site became hermitages, monasteries and small colonies small farms. In 1139 the family of powerful Borrello, Conti and captains of Pietrabbondante venture of Venice, took place on a considerable number of soldiers and Venetian artisans, probably from the colonies of Dalmatian "Serenissima" (a more recent hypothesis of the writer proposes the Venetian Alvise Zorzi the origin of this group from the Venetian colony of Apulia, but the investigation remains impossible due to lack of documents and the issue remains unclear). It seems clear, however, the foundation of the Venetian country itself - built on the hill opposite the curved Monte Caraceni - because of clear signs of Venetian culture still observable in the original district, the Ripa, otherwise known as "Venetian village."

The importance of Agnone went crescendo in Angevin period and also in the Aragonese, to the point that during the reign of the Bourbon Two Sicilies, the city was among the 56 cities regie directly dependent on the King, free from any other type of feudal subjection, equipped with high court, with the right to impose capital punishment. Belongs always all'Abruzzo Citeriore, when Joseph Bonaparte decided to create the Molise Region, it was left with the region. But during the reign of Joachim Murat, the place of maggiorenti asked and obtained the transition to Molise, basing the request on the geographical difficulties of the links Abruzzo, and hoping to become a role in the new domain, a small region. The first disappointment colse the Agnonesi soon after this passage, since the three districts where the Molise was divided, as were centers and capitals Larino, Isernia and Campobasso, Agnone excluded from any role as administrative primacy. Italy united, after all, reuniting the Abruzzo and Molise in a single region, in fact, made over this issue. Flourishing agro size and number and volume of small businesses, Agnone could develop in the course of the 800, a high number of educated minds of doctors, philosophers, jurists, theologians, from which came the honorable name of "Athens del Sannio ". The revolution in prices linked to the first development of the Italian end of the nineteenth, however, affect this balance, giving the green light to the phenomenon of migration.

During the fascist regime, Agnone was home confinement for many opponents of the regime, including Don Raimondo Viale, protagonista de "The priest right" to Nuto Revelli.

Since 1940, Agnone rose to a concentration camp for families of rakes Roma Gypsies in Italy. The local prefect to that end, she chose and was granted by the bishop of the grant of the monastery of St. Bernardino.

The latest population growth, the Agnone had in'40, then followed a steady decline from the'50s to today. In parallel - and paradoxically - the town saw sure signs of a significant socio-economic development, such as the birth of the local Civil Hospital, and one high school, including the Liceo Scientifico (first of Molise), the Istituto Tecnico Industriale, The Professional Institute, which is still present. It is also to be mentioned - in the postwar period - the birth of Italo Argentino Theater (founded thanks to the contributions of Agnonesi of Argentina) who was long one of the largest of Abruzzo-Molise, and currently (March 2008) is back to be for the closure of some major theaters in the two regions.

The last decades have seen Agnone develop a culture and modern tourist complex, with the spread of equestrian sports, the creation of numerous centers of farm, construction of swimming pools, hospitality events and entertainment to study (the latter linked to the world of medical sciences, religion, and especially the significant archaeological and palaeontological District).

Currently, the inhabitants would reunite Agnone, after two centuries of belonging to Molise, all'Abruzzo.

      Traditions
On December 24 in Agnone takes place 'Ndocciata', the greatest rite of fire, you know: it's a parade of thousands of huge torches built by craftsmen. Since 2000 this event takes place at times on the day of the Immaculate Conception. This tradition, which in antiquity was probably related to the rites of the rebirth of light, as well as Agnone was preserved - to a lesser extent - also in Santo Stefano di Sante Marie (L'Aquila) and assumed a different value by binding to the holidays of Christmas.
      N'docciata of Christmas Eve

Three days not miss are those relating to the Fair of the Arts and Crafts Antiques, edited Cultural Kerres: 17-19 August each year a large part of the old town is home to artisans to work, shops housed in the old matrix Venetian. You can admire goldsmiths, ramai, tanners, wrought iron crafts, embroidery and tombolo and others struggling with their ancient crafts that show and explain to the thousands of tourists stages and the magic of their craft. Also find craft of confetti, sweets and various dairy products processed on the spot. Gladdened by all the waders, jugglers, sputafuoco and popular music groups: one of the most successful is the evocation dell'Antica Serenade Agnonesi. Of course, you can enjoy the excellent products of local cuisine in the restaurant located inside points of the event, where you can dine with a few euros.

      Places of Interest
The International Museum of Bell stands next all'antichissima Pontificia Marinelli Foundry, one of the oldest in the world.

The Ancient Copper Foundries are located a few kilometers from the town, in the valley of the River Verrina are ancient smelters operated hydromechanics which were produced semifinished copper which were then sent to over 180 shops ramai Agnonesi that these semi-tine produced, caldai and various objects in copper.

The Church of St. Mark the Evangelist of the twelfth century shows a remarkable renaissance portal.

The Church of St. Francis is considered a national monument. Dating back to the XIV century, has a distinctive Gothic portal surmounted by a charming rosette. Stress from the superb dome of the original drum and bell tower (with the final part wrought iron). Inside the church, with decorations Ambrosio Piazza, there are rich altars and frescoes by Paolo Gamba Molise.

Adjacent to the Church of St. Francis is the former Convent of the PP. Conventual, with a magnificent cloister (whose walls are frescoes representing the life of St. Francis), now the headquarters of the Municipal Library and the Permanent Exhibition of Old Paper with rare volumes, including an old copy of Plato Opera Omnia, dating back to the sixteenth century.
      Piazza XX Settembre

The Church of St. Emidio dates back to the fourteenth century with a splendid Gothic portal, at the entrance to the masterpieces of art of Giulio Monteverde, Giacomo Colombo, John and Amalia Dupr?. Features are the wooden statues of the 12 apostles, size, attributed to the Neapolitan school of 1650. Adjacent to the church is the Emidiana Library, rich in ancient texts of the eleventh century.

For architectural features and works are kept to visit the churches of S. Peter, St. Nicholas, St. Anthony Abbot (with adjoining open bell tower), San Biase (oldest church in Agnone, the XI century), Sant'Amanza, Holy Cross, the Trinity, the Annunciation. In the only town there are 13 churches, reflecting the strong influence exercised over the centuries, the Vatican back in this corner of the Molise.

No less interesting is the civil architecture of the country: the old town is clearly Venetian is venturing along the ancient streets of the village we come across frequently in the Venetian shops and small stone statue depicting, in fact, Venetian lions.

Antica Bottega Orafa sita in Corso Garibaldi witnessed an migration of artisans to Agnone lagoon, which took place centuries ago by the family Borrello.

Very beautiful is the main square in the historical center, Piazza Plebiscito, formerly known as Piazza del Tomolo, where the confluence of seven streets that start at as many other areas of the old village and which has a feature marble fountain dating back to 1881 (year of construction of the first aqueduct Agnonesi urban), restored as the whole square, between late 2006 and early 2007.

As mentioned, the Italo-Argentine Theater was built in the postwar period with the funds of Agnonesi of South America. It works both as a theater (the only one in the province of Isernia), both as cinema.
