Casacalenda -- La festa di San Giuseppe
Date: Current

"The feast of St. Joseph in a particularly acute Casacalenda where the litanies are sung before the altar set up in homes, it makes the distribution of blessed bread and dinner is held at the basis of thirteen traditional dishes that are lean to the thirteen privileges St. Joseph. During the banquet acts and gestures reflect a religious rite. It 'obvious component not wishing to donate to charity and receive no starvation. Even in St. Joseph lit the bonfire with the distribution of "zeppole" during the songs and traditional "Girotondo" around fires."

Casacalenda -- Tower, Terra Vecchia
Date: 2005
Notes: This look out tower is situated at the end of Terra Vecchia. It was probably used both as a look out tower and part of the defensive strategy in medieval times.

Notes: This is the Torre Simonelli, located about half way down the street that leads to Terra Vecchia (e ball pa chiazz!). Besides the clock tower, this is another distinguishing architectural feature that makes Casacalenda unique.

Casacalenda, Molise, Italy
Date: 2005
Notes: Cooking maybe a recreation to some of us today whose needs and wants have changed completely from the old days of Casacalenda, but home made pasta such as you see in this picture (i cavetielle)were a treat took a long time to make. Here is my aunt, Maddalena Marcogliese in Vincelli (zie nucce)posing just as she finished making a batch.

Casacalenda, Campobasso
Casacalenda, Molise, Italy
Date: Current
Notes: My late uncle, Zio Piedro, used to boast that in our hometown of Casacalenda, people did not speak "Italian" they spoke "Casacalendese." In pre World War II Italy most people identified with their towns or villages first, and their country, second.

Casacalenda

Notes: The fact that I was born in the Italian countryside has shaped who I am. Why this is so is a bit of mystery as I only lived there a few years. I suppose having parents who spent their youth trying to make a living off the land forged their identity, and in turn, mine.
