Casacalenda -- Museo Multimediale del Bufu | | Date: Current | Notes: In a tourist brochure published by the "Museo Multimediale del Bufu" in which the photo in this entry appeared, Matteo Patavino, the curator of the Museum of the Bufu, notes that "The 'Bufu' of Casacalenda is a complex socio-cultural phenomenon that goes beyond the strictly musical happening [that begins on the evening of December 31st and goes on up untio the afternoon of January 1st]. The name, Bufu, possesses a dual significance: it stands for both the wooden tub, or drum, operated by means of friction induced on goatskin by an external reed, and for the musical group that operates it. 'Fare il bufu' , to make Bufu, means to organize a Bufu 'team'.... It was not my intention to turn the instrument into myth, although it is not poor in mythic elements: the tub, the read, the goatskin.... Yesterday the tub, today the barrel; without the top cover, the edge is fitted with a rubber strip that facilitates the mounting and the firming of the membrane. The skin, however has been replaced by 'tela penna,' the ticking cloth used to make inner covers for pillows. Materials change, but one always looks for ways and means to rig up the sound machine. The reed, from a river bed, the only piece that has not changed with the passing of time, has to be straight and well seasoned; every bufu-player chooses it based on its own physical and expressive characteristics.... The cloth vibrates through the reed as it is rubbed by wet hands. The Bufu-player keeps his hands well close together, striking the thumb of the lower hand in the upper one; since the hands have to be wet often, each player will have a bucketful of water hanging from his own instrument. The Bufu-players of Casacalenda all play with bare hands.... In the museum, to one side of the "Dionysian instrument" and the modern one, you will find elements of African and Arab music as well as the sounds of Latin America, Ireland and, of course, Southern Italy; centuries old tradition notwithstanding, Bufu music and instruments have a way of constantly evolving.... It is extraordinary to note how Casacalenda musicians are able to mould the instrument to their own musical aptitude: the younger ones, for example, are able to produce timbre combinations taht are closer to the techno -- their music -- than to tradition.... The Bufu, essence of connotative, individual and collective "popular phenomenon" in Cascalenda stands for aggregation, rivalry, passion. Mirror of the community. The Bufu is no longer a farmer's thing, or simply a male thing. The last of taboos has been broken, the one that has lasted longer: women are now part of the teams. A cultural identity enclosed in a myth that regenerates itself over and over again, as in an old initiatory ritual whose symbols, always present and deeply rooted, are all connected to a voice that recalls the heart-beat and the sounds of nature. *

An accompanying text written by the town's Mayor, Nicola Eugenio Romagnuolo, states: "The realization of the Museum of the Bufu completes the journey undertaken by the Municipal Administration when it started a process of rediscovery and valorization of popular culture and traditions.... Bufu is the onomatopeic name of an instrument that has been described by Giovanni Cerri as follows: 'a simple instrument, an artisan instrument devised in a time past by shepherds. Two musical notes come out of its heart: Bu and Fu. In the first, there is the barking of the dog that chases away the imprudent wayfare that crosses the street; in the second, the voice of passing. Two notes of a single musical one that go beyond time and space for the glory of life.' "Il periodo di Capodanno e dell'Epifania e festeggiato con le pasquette e il giro notturno di brigate di amici per rallegrare le famiglie col suono di tamburrelli, pifferi e chitarre. Si tratta delle "maitunate" che vengono accompagnate a Casacalenda dal suono del "buf" , un tamburo a frizione di cui si tramandano da qualche secolo le tecniche di costruzione....
