      San Martino in Pensilis ? un comune di 4.824 abitanti della provincia di Campobasso e si trova su una collina a 281 m slm. Nella campagna circostante si coltivano grano, barbabietole, girasoli, sono presenti grandi distese di ulivi e vigneti.
      Territorio
      Il territorio sanmartinese ? uno dei pi? estesi del Molise e i suoi confini naturali sono rappresentati dal torrente Saccione verso Mezzogiorno e dal Biferno a Settentrione, allargandosi fin quasi alla periferia dei due paesi albanesi confinanti di Portocannone e di Ururi. Altro importante corso d'acqua che attraversa il suo territorio ? il torrente Cigno, affluente del Biferno, che ha una portata molto pi? grande di quella del Saccione. Il paese ? adagiato sopra un colle a strapiombo verso levante, ripidissimo verso Nord-Ovest, si stende poi gradualmente col suo territorio verso le zone pianeggianti dei sui tre corsi d'acqua pi? importanti. Altri corsi d'acqua minori sono il Vallone Reale e il Vallone Sassani (affluenti di sinistra del Saccione).
     
      Del terreno boschivo restano attualmente solo alcune macchie, avanzi di quel che secoli addietro era una lussureggiante vegetazione, il cossiddetto Bosco di Ramitelli, che si estendeva lungo tutto il corso del Saccione dal mare fino a Rotello.
     
      Toponimo
      Il toponimo San Martino, come supposto dal Tria e da altri illustri studiosi, sembra proprio derivare da una Chiesa, situata sul colle, dedicata a San Martino di Tours. L'aggiunta in Pensili, corrotto poi in Pensilis, ne indica invece la sua caratteristica peculiare: posto sopra la collina, sospeso verso ponente su di uno strapiombo.
     
      Una volta c'era anche una chiesa entro le mura del paese vecchio (Mezzaterra) denominata S. Maria in Pensili. Da fonti diverse questo colle viene citato spesso in un latino barbarico come in Pisili, in Pesule o in Pensulis.
     
      Per contraddistinguerlo dai numerosi omonimni del Regno, nel 1863, Con R.D. del 26 luglio, a San Martino gli si aggiunge la forma latineggiante in Pensilis. [1]
     
      Storia
      Il Tria dunque ipotizza che, nel 495 d.C., dopo la distruzione di Cliternia da parte dei Goti, alcuni abitanti venissero a rifugiarsi sopra il colle, edificandovi cos? una chiesa dedicata a S. Martino, vescovo di Tours. Le fonti che fanno riferimento all'alto medioevo comunque risultano alquanto lacunose ed oscure. Ci? che sembra certo ? che verso il XI-XII secolo vi fosse almeno una chiesa. Infatti in un diploma di Pasquale II del 1102 risulta una chiesa col nome S. Martini Episcopi in Biferno. Masciotta riporta poi tra gli ex Feudi di Guardialfiera, un certo S. Martino del Monte.
     
      Durante il periodo Longobardo il territorio di S. Martino ? competenza della Contea di Larino, dipendente dal Ducato, poi Principato, di Benevento. Con l'arrivo dei Normanni, verso il 1061, entra a far parte della nascente e potente Contea Di Loritello, fino alla sua estinzione (1194), quando il Regno di Sicilia pass? in mano agli Svevi.
     
      Il Masciotta scrive che ? al tempo dei normanni appartenne [S. Martino] alla Contea di Loritello (Rotello); e si sa, per di pi?, che Roberto I d'Altavilla Conte Palatino [2] essendosi nel 1095 recato per le penitenze quaresimali a Montecassino, fece donazione alla Badia di quanto egli possedeva a S. Martino; onde l'universit? divent? feudo ecclesiastico ?.
     
      In epoca Normanna avvengono almeno due eventi eclatanti: il terremoto del 1125 (testimoniato nel Chronicon di Falcone Beneventano [3] e in quello del Monastero di S. Stefano in Rivo Maris) che distrusse sia Cliterniano che il Monastero di San Felice, e il rinvemento, alcuni decenni dopo, del Corpo di San Leo, monaco benedettino (originario sembra di S. Martino) da parte del Conte Roberto III di Bassavilla. Da questo epocale ritrovamento viene fatta risalire, secondo la leggenda popolare, la tradizionale Corsa dei Carri, ma essa ha un'origine molto pi? antica, sannitica, possibilmente.
     
      Il Tria scrive ? Non sappiamo chi fussero i suoi Possessori, e il primo, che si ci incontra nel Registro de' Baroni sotto Guglielmo II, detto il Buono, nella Rubrica de' Feudatarj di Capitanata ... si appella D. Amerius S. Martini tenet S. Martinum, quod est Feudum duorum militum. Pass? poi in Persona del Conte di Montagano, ma non sappiamo con qual titolo ?.
     
      Del periodo Svevo, d'altro canto, il Masciotta riporta che ? trascorre privo di notizie di S. Martino e cos? gran parte di quello angioino; e il Tria, per colmare il vuoto, mette innanzi i Conti di Montagano che ne sarebbero stati titolari. Tutto ci? ? erroneo, ed infondato ?.
     
      Nel disastroso terremoto del 1456 [4] non viene riferita da fonti storiche la distruzione o danneggiamento di alcun centro chiamato S. Martino. Ci? fa supporre che sopra il colle vi fossero solo costruzioni ben fortificate e dunque ben messe strutturalmente come il Castello. Verso la seconda met? del XV secolo iniziano a stabilirsi le comunit? albanesi, in fuga dal Turco, ripopolando buona parte del Territorio, devastato e spopolato dal precedente cataclisma. Cos? S. Martino si trov? circondato da comunit? albanofone: Ururi, Portocannone, Campomarino, Chieuti.
     
      Il Masciotta riferisce che il 5 agosto del 1566 ? i Turchi, sbarcati a Termoli e fugati da Guglionesi, cercano di entrare in S. Martino per metterla a sacco; ma sono costretti a ritirarsi ripiegando verso il litorale ?.
     
      Nel 1811 San Martino insieme ad altri paesi della Capitanata (Ururi, Portocannone, Campomarino e Termoli) entra a far parte del Contado di Molise.
     
      Personaggi Illustri
      Domenico Sassi - Poeta dialettale sanmartinese. Tra le sue opere vanno ricordate A Storie de Sande L? e I Quaderni Sanmartinesi. Ha trascritto inoltre la Carrese, testo orale dialettale antichissimo di una canzone popolare, di cui ancora oggi due cantori alternativamente ne cantano i distici, davanti alla porta della Chiesa, la vigilia della Corsa dei Carri (30 aprile).

      Palazzo Baronale - lato della Piazzetta

      In realt? una volta era un vero e proprio Castello con ponte levatoio, merlatura, e torri. Attualmente ? impossibile riconoscerne l'antica fisionomia, sia per la divisione proprietaria che per gli inadatti restauri succesivi. Non ? un fatto soltanto odierno, poich? gi? il Masciotta ai suoi tempi notava concisamente che ? i restauri e le variazioni, cui l'edificio and? soggetto nel tempo, hanno cancellate le tracce della omogeneit? dello stile e della vetust? di esso, di guisa che nulla pi? sussiste di ci? che l'anonimo cronista accenna ?.
     
      Erano proprietari ? in parte i signori Tozzi e in parte il Conte Cattaneo ? quando il Masciotta riportava di un manoscritto del 1590 di questo anonimo cronista, conservato fino a pochi anni addietro, nel Convento di Ges? e Maria (l'attuale Convento). ... ? Trovasi in dicta terra di S. Martino un antico palazzo in forma di castello ch'? di propriet? et pertinenzia del nostro Ill.mo Signore D. Ferdinando de Capua quarto duca di Termoli. Dicto palazzo ? in forma di commoda et insespugnabile fortezza, et ? posto nel luogo pi? sublime di dicta terra. Ha a guardia del lato che ? pi? esposto all'assalto delli nemici, un forte castello quadrato, con contromurali a scarpa, attaccato alle mura di dicta Terra. Si entra nel palazzo con alta e ben costructa sciulia di breccioni (vale a dire rampa), dopo la quale viene il ponte levatoio che cuopre il fosso di sicurezza, che gira tutto intorno al fabbricato. Passato il ponte si trova il primo portone del cortile con sua ritirata e difesa per merli e merloni di pietra massiccia et altre opere ben munite per improvvisi assalti. Dalla corte si passa ad un secondo portone che mette nelle stanzie tutte commode e ben constructe et assai numerose ?
     
      Leggende
      Ius primae noctis
      Attorno a un castello sorgono sempre delle leggende, come quella della usuale pratica, nei tempi passati, dello ius primae noctis. Si dice che un tal Barone o Conte, possibilmente vissuto in epoca medioevale, tenesse in uso questo diritto, che riusciva ovviamente pi? che molesto ai suoi sudditi. In una stanza del Castello vi aveva fatto costruire una larga botola dove era sta installata una ruota con lame affilatissime, che, se azionata, girava, tranciando chiunque vi fosse malaugaratamente caduto dentro. Essa veniva mostrata soltanto ai riluttanti, i quali al solo pensiero di finirvi dentro, avrebbero di certo, almeno tacitamente, acconsentito alle turpi soddisfazioni del Signorotto. Senonch? un giorno capit? un novello sposo, che pi? che riluttante, era deciso a porre fine a questa ingiustizia. Il barone allora ordin? alle sue guardie di andare a prelevare l'insolente che aveva osato ribellarsi alla sua autorit?. Il giovane non mostr?, di primo acchito, quel che aveva in mente, ben simulando invece timore e accondiscenzenza, soffocando dentro di s? la sua rabbia. Timidamente poi, davanti al signorotto, abbasava la testa, fingeva, annuiva, chiedendo perdono a sua signoria illustrissima ... Il barone pi? che soddisfatto del risultato ottenuto, volle mostrarli, quasi con aria riconoscente, la stanza fatidica, facendogli vedere cos? quell'orribile ordigno infernale. ? Guarda, mio caro giovane, cosa ti avrebbe aspettato se tu avessi rifiutato ? disse compiaciuto e nel dire di colpo fece azionare la leva, che cominci? a far muovere la terribile ruota, con le sue affilatissime lame. Al che il giovane, prima che il barone potesse avere il tempo di rendersi conto delle sue vere intenzioni, e potesse cos? chiamare le guardie, violento gli diede una spinta con tutta la forza e la rabbia repressa che aveva. In un lampo il barone precipit? nella botola, e in un lampo il giovane subito la richiuse. L'urlo disumano del Signore pareva ormai solo un bisbiglio. Il giovane riusc? poi in un modo o nell'altro a fuggire. Fu cos? che si pose fine all'ingiusto diritto dello ius primae noctis.
     
      Passaggio segreto
      Secondo una credenza popolare, si pensa che una volta vi fosse un passaggio segreto che dal Castello portava fino all'attuale Convento. Pi? che una leggenda, potrebbe trattarsi anche di storia vera, o, almeno, non del tutto fantasiosa. Era consuetudine, specialmente nel Medioevo, costruire cunicoli e passaggi segreti, che all'occorenza potessero essere utilizzati come via di fuga da eventuali assedi.
     
      Chiesa di S. Pietro Apostolo
      Importante soprattutto per la facciata principale con il suo slanciato campanile in un magnifico stile tardo barocco. Scrive il Tria che essa ? ... non solamente ? stata riformata, e decorata quanto a' suoi Ministri per lo maggior culto Divino, ma ancora ? stata abbellita quanto alla fabbrica ; imperciocch?, distrutta l'antica, ora si vede in altro miglior modo a tre navi, fornita, e ornata tutta di stucco co' suoi pilastri ben fatti. Oltre all'Altar Maggiore vi sono sei altri Altari minori sotto diversi titoli, e tutti di una stessa misura, e fattezza, ornati di stucco all'uso moderno romano, dove i quadri ancora sono dello stesso pennello, e sono proveduti di Sagre Suppellettili, e tutto si ? fatto nell'anno 1728, in occasione della ristaurazione di questa Chiesa. per la Traslazione del Corpo del Glorioso S. Leo Confessore, ... ?
     
      Anche il Masciotta riporta di questa radicale ristrutturazione [5] Inoltre ci informa che ? nella notte dal 19 al 20 marzo 1893 un fulmine determin? l'incendio della fabbrica; onde molti arredi ed oggetti preziosi andarono in cenere, e perduta and? pure una bella tela di Niccol? Melanconico raffigurante La Vergine adorata dai protettori locali.
     
      Nel 1728 la parrocchiale fu eretta dal Tria in Collegiata insigne, con dodici canonici aventi le insegne della cappa o zamparda, e della mozzetta. Recentemente, per lo zelo dell'attuale arciprete, la chiesa ? stata ampliata di alcuni ambienti per uso di sagrestia e di archivio parrocchiale.?

      * San Leone Confessore, popolarmente meglio conosciuto come San Leo ? il santo protettore di San Martino in Pensilis, che si festeggia il 2 maggio. Questa ricorrenza ? preceduta dalla tipica Corsa dei Carri, a lui dedicata, che prende luogo ogni anno il 30 aprile.

      * Pampanella. - ? il prodotto gastronomico pi? rinomato e apprezzato, non solo in ambito locale, ma anche nel resto dell'Italia, se non addirittura all'estero, ovviamente nel ristretto ambito delle persone che hanno avuto modo e la ventura di assaggiarla. Ci sono a volte anche sanmartinesi emigrati, che altrove si industriano con un fai da te a prepararla. Gli ingredienti della Pampanella sono : carne di maiale cotta al forno, condita e insaporita con sale, aglio e peperoncino. Prima della cottura vengono spalmati i contenitori con sugna.

      San Martino in Pensilis is a town of 4824 inhabitants of the province of Campobasso and is located on a hill 281 m above sea level. In the surrounding growing wheat, sugar beet, sunflowers, there are large expanses of olive trees and vineyards.
      Territory
      The territory Sanmartinesi is one of the largest of Molise and its natural borders are represented by the stream Saccione towards the south and from North to Biferno, enlarging almost on the outskirts of the two neighboring countries of Albania and Portocannone Ururi. Another important river that crosses its territory is the Swan river, a tributary of the Biferno, which is far greater than that of Saccione.       History

      Secret Passage

      Santa Croce di Magliano is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Campobasso in the Italian region Molise, located about 30 km northeast of Campobasso. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 4,863 and an area of 52.6 km?.[1]
     
      S. Croce di Magliano is situated on a hilltop approximately 608 m. above sea level, just north of the Fortore river.
