Montagano is a town of 1,248 inhabitants of the province of Campobasso.
History
Its name probably derives from "montis" more "Aganis" which in ancient Greek literally means beautiful mountain. The predominant activity is surely the agriculture, flanked by the farmer. Of particular importance is the production of high quality tomatoes, and wine from an ancient muscat grape called "muscatel." Is also the widespread artisanal production of sausages and hams, but also especially in cheese made of sheep's milk. The majority of the population are elderly with more than 65 years. The inhabitants of Montagano are cheerfully "famous" for their dialect promoted by the theater company "li m'brenguli" with its comedies in the vernacular. The country also has historical significance to the fact that Pope Celestine V Peter studied and took the votes (around 1230) at the Abbey of Santa Maria di Faifoli, an ancient monastery dating from the twelfth century and indeed in places Faifoli site, about three kilometers outside the town. Montagano also was born in Achille Pistilli, a musician of the seventeenth century, from which it derives the name of the country's association banda, directed by Louis Ialenti. In 1996 the municipality has signed a pact of friendship with the Belgian city of Huy, with many emigrants montaganese moved to Belgium from the early twentieth century, in search of fortune.
Near the archaeological excavations are Fagifulae. Curiosity: the name of the abbey of Santa Maria di Faifoli seems, in the word Faifoli be similar to Fagifulae.
Montangano gave birth to the parents of Don DeLillo, one of the major exponents of American literature.
