Notes: "5 P.M. Making dolls' legs for Campbell Kids. Cattena family. 71 Sullivan St., 5th floor front. As soon as the photo was taken, Rose carried the box full of finished legs to the Aetna Doll and Toy Co, (whose name was on the box). Tessie, (on the right) lives down stairs and does this work there. Was helping here. Rose is 14 years old. Lena, (deformed), is 12, Nettie, 9 years old is very deft. Notes: Mrs. Montemora, fifty-five years old, is janitress for a large tenement, 133 W. Houston St., (lives Apt 7) housing 26 families. When not tending the furnace or occupied with other duties for others and her own family, she makes flowers, assisted by her niece Josephine, 12 years old. They both work until 10:00 P.M. frequently. Photo was taken at 2:30 P.M. Feb 2, 1912, a school-day, and their only explanation was, "She just stayed out." Making buds. Several adult men relatives live with them. Works until 9 p.m. some nights. They live in 2 small rooms; paying $5.00 a month rent. Makes $2.00 a week. A 15 year old brother works in factory and sleeps in folding bed in this room." Do not go to school yet. Through an interpreter they said Peter is 15, Jimmie 14, Carbo 9 and John 7 years old;; but those seemed to me too high. they were working in a very dim light."
