Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Date: 1942
Notes: Many new immigrants got jobs as maintenance workers (including Mary Melfi's mother). Those who worked for big companies like CN Rails were viewed as the luckiest people in the world -- they had jobs with security and pension benefits. The picture to the left is part of the CSTC/CN collection #CN004110 titled "CN employee cleaning the interior of a passenger car." Permission to use the image was granted by the Canada Science and Technology Museum Corporation (CSTC).

Italian immigrants
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Date: 1958
Notes: Cincenzo Ciamarra was born in Duronia, Molise. As a young man he served in the army; first, he fought in Ethiopia, later in Italy. After World War II he immigrated to Canada. The early years were difficult, he did odd jobs and worked in construction. Fortunately, there were many people from Molise in Montreal and that made living here less lonesome. His life-long dream was to own his own business. After many years of "sudore e di sacrifici" (sweat and sacrifice) he opened his own grocery shop," Fleury Fruit Store," and his dreams for a better life were realized.
The photo and short biography of Cincenzo Ciamarra were first published in Centro Dante's "Album di Famiglia (1996). Permission to use the material was granted by Santa Cabrini Hospital's administration. For more information visit: www.santacabrini.qc.ca.
