Notes: "Joe Mello, 62 Grinnel St., New Bedford. Appeared about eight or nine: could not speak English except to tell us that he was a sweeper in the spinning room (two other boys confirmed this); watched him go in at noon and come out at 6 P.M. on August 21, 1911. At the houses his mother gave his name as Jose Mello, ten years old. There was no certificate for this boy at the superintendent's office. Birth records ambiguous." Photo & Notes: Lewis Wickes Hine.
