New York City | Date: 1910 | Notes: The photo taken by Lewis W. Hine is titled, "Group of Italian street laborers, working under Sixth Ave...." In the first half of the 20th century Italians worked mainly in blue collar jobs, acquiring skills and moving up the economic ladder. They were seen as diligent and reliable workers (and not prone to alcoholism). Even though the first wave of Italian immigrants often did jobs nobody else wanted, by the second half of the century most of their descendants had fully integrated into the American labor force. Apparently two thirds of Italian Americans are currently employed as white-collar workers, the majority of whom have professional positions in business, medicine, law, and education.
