Mulberry Street, New York City, U.S.A.
Date: 1900
Notes: Prior to the 19 century few Italians left the country of their birth. In 1850 there were less than 4,000 Italians living in the U.S. However, by 1900 there were over 480,000 Italians residing in the United States, most were living in the Boston or New York City area. In the 1910s Italian immigrants generally looked for apartments in New York City where fellow countrymen resided. Often, Sicilians settled on one street, while those from Calabria settled on another. Later, in the 1950s Italians became less selective; Italian neighborhoods included people from various regions. Currently, New York City has the highest number of Italian Americans in one area.
