Melbourne, Australia
Date: 1948
Notes: Public Relations & Marketing Manager for Cabrini Health, Jackie Meiers, in response to a request for archival material, gave a brief history of the photo to the left. In January 1948 ten members of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus arrived in Melbourne, from Rome, to assume ownership of St. Benedict's Hospital, an Italian-Australian health care facility. "The Sisters were, in the main, Italian with very little English between them and few resources. They knew nothing of Australia and due to the country's geographic insularity at that time, there were many setbacks in the early years -- problems with language, customs, food and a general mistrust by people of the foreign ways of these new Sisters. However, they worked tirelessly in all the areas of the Hospital -- from the kitchen to the operating theaters -- winning the respect of everyone they met and endearing themselves to their patients. We owe much to the perseverance and hard work of these pioneers, as they worked to overcome the hurdles. So successful were the Sisters that, ten years later in 1958, St. Benedict's was replaced by a much larger hospital -- one bearing the name of the Mission's Founder, Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini." Santa Cabrini Hospital
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Date: Built in 1960
Notes: The Santa Cabrini Hospital is located in the East end of Montreal. It was originally built to service Montreal's growing Italian community in their mother tongue; in the early 1960s it was run by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, an order founded by the Italian-born Mother Cabrini who became an American citizen at the turn of the first century (After her death, in 1946, she became the first American citizen to be canonized). Nowadays, Santa Cabrini Hospital is a public institution and is run like any other health care facility in the province of Quebec (In 1966 Canada introduced Medicare, a comprehensive health insurance system, that offers free medical services to all its citizens and landed immigrants). The Santa Cabrini Hospital operates in French, but also provides services in Italian. For more information visit: www.santacabrini.qc.ca.

Notes: Centro Dante, a residential care facility for senior citizens of Italian origin, is operated by the Santa Cabrini Hospital. It opened its doors in 1981. Since that time it has taken care of many older Italians, giving them a sense of belonging and worth. Centro Dante also offers recreational and social activities for seniors who still live in their own homes. Centro Dante is very much loved by the Italian community. The photo of Signor Spoltore and Signora Bastone was taken at a party at Centro Dante. For further information visit: www.santacabrini.qc.ca.
