Casacalenda, Molise | Date: 1925 | Notes: This is a photo of Pasquale Vincelli circa 1925. Pasquale would have been 65 years old at the time. What is unique about his story is that he raised six girls and one boy practically by himself as he lost his wife with the birth of their last daughter. Pasquale's story is parallel to many other similar stories of sacrifices that people had to make during those difficult times. He was my great grandfather. | Contributed by: Antonio Fantillo

Casacalenda, Molise, Italy | Date: 1920s? | Notes: Here is a picture of Sofia (nee Berardino) Montagano (1847-1932), the contributor's maternal great grandmother. Sofia Berardino came from a family of millers. For generations the family business prospered; unfortunately, when the town brought in electricity, the mill [powered by water], was no longer vital to the local farming community and it eventually floundered. Sofia Montagano had 9 children. | Contributed by: Mary Melfi
