Casacalenda, Molise, Italy
Date: 1940s
Notes: As a child my mother would often sing, "You are my Sunshine," to me. I didn't realize how odd that was till years later. She spoke broken English and yet she could sing this song so well. When I asked her about it, she told me she had heard the American soldiers sing it in Casacalenda [after the town had been liberated from the Germans] and that's how she had learned it.... Casacalenda, Molise, Italy
Date: early 1940s
Notes: Here is picture of Raffaele Di Tullio (on the left) and a buddy. In the 1930s Raffaele Di Tullio was sent to fight in Abyssinia (Ethiopia) Africa and hated every minute of it. A quiet and peaceful man, he disliked Mussolini's war policies. In the 1940s he was taken prisoner by the Germans and spent a number of years in their miserable work camps. He refused to talk about his years there, it was too painful for him to remember.
