Petite Italie Montreal
Little Italy, Montreal, Quebec
Date: Summer 2007
Notes: Census Canada reports that there are 249,205 Quebecers who consider themselves to be of Italian descent (3.5 per cent of the total population), most of whom (225,000) live in the city of Montreal. Those Italian immigrants who settled in Montreal in the first half of the 20th century lived in and around "Little Italy." The area runs along Saint Lawrence Blvd., between Saint-Zotique and Jean Talon Streets. From the early 1900s to the 1960s the area, close to the Jean Talon market and the Church of the Madonna della Difesa, was the heart of the Italian community. Nowadays, most Italians have moved out of "Little Italy", though there are still many Italian specialty shops and restaurants present in the area. Casa d'Italia Montreal
Little Italy, Montreal, Quebec
Date: Built in 1936
Notes: Located at 55 Jean Talon, in the heart of Little Italy, "la Casa d'Italia" opened its doors in 1936; for over half a century it has been servicing the Italian community. Local Italian societies use its huge auditorium for special events. The Quebec chapter of the National Congress of Italian-Canadians meets here. "La Casa d'Italia" prides itself as being the "curore della communita." While "la Casa d'Italia", built in the "Art Moderne style," is considered a major historic landmark, many Montrealers of Italian origin now patronize The Leonardo Da Vinci Centre, recently built. Both community centers are a vital part of the day to day life of Italian Montrealers who take pride in their heritage.
